Getting Started

Collecting for the Atari 2600 is one of the most accessible and rewarding areas of retro gaming. With over 500 officially released titles and a thriving community, there's something for every budget — from common titles at a few pounds to ultra-rare prototypes commanding thousands.

Understanding Rarity

Atari 2600 game rarity is typically rated on a 1–10 scale, where 1 is extremely common (found in any charity shop) and 10 is virtually unobtainable. Most collectors encounter games in the 1–6 range regularly; anything rated 7 or above starts to become genuinely scarce. Our game database includes NTSC and PAL rarity ratings for every title.

What Affects Value

Several factors determine a game's market value beyond raw rarity: condition of the label, whether the box and manual are included, regional variations, and label variants. Complete-in-box (CIB) copies typically command 3–5x the price of a loose cartridge. Some label variants — particularly early Atari "text label" versions — are significantly rarer than their picture label counterparts.

Spotting Reproductions

As prices rise for rare titles, reproductions have become increasingly common. Key things to check: label print quality, cartridge shell colour and texture, PCB board style, and chip markings. Our individual game pages include reproduction warnings where relevant.
